A unit converter translates a measurement from one unit into another without changing the quantity it represents — 5 kilometers and 3.1 miles are the same distance, just written differently. Whether you’re following an American recipe measured in cups, checking your weight in pounds, or making sense of a weather forecast in Fahrenheit, fast and accurate conversions prevent costly mistakes. This guide covers the methods, the key conversion factors, and the traps to avoid.

How to Use the Unit Converter

  1. Open the Unit Converter tool above.
  2. Choose a category: Length, Weight, Temperature, Time, or Digital Storage.
  3. Type the value, then pick the From and To units.
  4. The result appears instantly — change any input and it recalculates automatically.

What Is Unit Conversion?

Unit conversion restates the same quantity in a different unit. The core rule: multiply by a conversion factor — a ratio that equals 1, such as (2.54 cm / 1 inch). Because the factor equals 1, the quantity itself doesn’t change, only how it’s written.

Example: 12 inches × (2.54 cm / 1 inch) = 30.48 cm. The “inch” units cancel out, leaving centimeters behind.

Length: Metric vs. Imperial

Most of the world uses metric while the US still uses imperial. These are the conversions you’ll reach for most often:

From To Multiply by Example
1 inch centimeters 2.54 (exact) 12 in = 30.48 cm
1 foot meters 0.3048 6 ft = 1.83 m
1 yard meters 0.9144 10 yd = 9.14 m
1 mile kilometers 1.60934 26.2 mi (marathon) = 42.2 km
1 kilometer miles 0.621371 10 km = 6.21 mi
1 meter feet 3.28084 2 m = 6.56 ft

The Metric Ladder

Inside the metric system, converting is just moving a decimal point. Memorize the ladder: km → hm → dam → m → dm → cm → mm (largest to smallest). Each step down multiplies by 10; each step up divides by 10.

Example: 5 km to meters is 3 steps down → 5 × 1,000 = 5,000 m. And 750 cm to meters is 2 steps up → 750 ÷ 100 = 7.5 m.

Weight: Pounds, Ounces, Kilograms

From To Multiply by Example
1 pound (lb) kilograms 0.453592 150 lb = 68.0 kg
1 kilogram pounds 2.20462 70 kg = 154.3 lb
1 ounce (oz) grams 28.3495 8 oz = 226.8 g
1 stone (UK) kilograms 6.35029 12 st = 76.2 kg

Temperature Formulas

Temperature can’t use simple multiplication because the scales start at different zero points. Use these formulas instead:

  • °C to °F: (°C × 9/5) + 32 — e.g. 25°C = 77°F
  • °F to °C: (°F − 32) × 5/9 — e.g. 98.6°F (normal body temperature) = 37°C
  • °C to Kelvin: °C + 273.15 — e.g. 25°C = 298.15 K

Time and Digital Storage

Time is straightforward: 1 minute = 60 seconds, 1 hour = 3,600 seconds, 1 day = 24 hours, 1 week = 7 days.

Digital storage steps up in powers of 1,024: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB. Note that drive manufacturers often advertise using 1,000 per step instead — that’s why a “64 GB” flash drive shows up as only about 59 GB on your computer.

Cooking Volumes for US Recipes

American recipes measure in cups and spoons instead of milliliters:

  • 1 cup = 236.6 ml (commonly rounded to 240 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon = 15 ml; 1 teaspoon = 5 ml
  • 1 US gallon = 3.785 liters

Worked Examples

Example 1: A marathon is 26.2 miles. In kilometers: 26.2 × 1.60934 = 42.2 km.

Example 2: You weigh 150 lb and a form asks for kilograms: 150 × 0.453592 = 68.0 kg.

Example 3: An American recipe calls for 2 cups of milk. In milliliters: 2 × 236.6 = 473 ml (about half a liter).

Example 4: Driving 60 mph in kilometers per hour: 60 × 1.60934 = 96.6 km/h.

Common Conversion Mistakes

  • Forgetting to square for area: 1 m² = 10,000 cm², not 100 cm² — conversion factors get raised to the power of the dimension.
  • Adding before converting: 2 kg + 500 g isn’t 2,500 kg. Convert first: 2,000 g + 500 g = 2,500 g.
  • Going the wrong way on the ladder: moving up divides, moving down multiplies. Mixing them up throws results off 100-fold.
  • Using 1,000 for digital storage: computers step by 1,024, not 1,000.

Unit Converter FAQs

How many centimeters are in an inch?
Exactly 2.54 cm. It’s an international definition agreed in 1959, not an approximation.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit quickly in my head?
Double the Celsius, subtract 10%, then add 32. For 25°C: 50 − 5 + 32 = 77°F.

Why does my 64 GB drive show only about 59 GB?
Manufacturers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes, while your computer counts 1 GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024³). Same drive, different rulers.

How many pounds is 1 kilogram?
2.20462 lb. For a quick estimate, double it and add 10%: 70 kg → 140 + 14 = 154 lb.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. So 72 km/h = 20 m/s. Multiply by 3.6 to go the other way.
